Document Access, established in 1991, was a specialised software company with offices in Rotterdam, Dallas and New York. The focal point of the company's activities had gradually shifted to the insurance branch, making a change of name a necessity.

Under the new name Essentium, and with a newly created identity, the company became a leading systems integrator and application software provider to the insurance industry in Europe and the U.S.

Essentium's Insurance Product Development Environment (IPDE) was a ‘next generation’ calculation server that enabled insurance companies to create and update products more simply and quickly. Essentium later became part of the HP Software division in 2001.
